Booking Through Thursday: Reviews

btt buttonQuestion June 2, 2011: Do you read book reviews? Whose do you trust? Do they affect your reading habits? Your buying habits?

My answer: This question seemed very familiar so I took a look at my previous BTT posts, and lo and behold I found it: June 24, 2010: Book Reviews! My answer continues to be: no not really. Sometimes I'll notice that a book is getting a lot of "press" whether that be reviews on other blogs, in magazines, or posters on the subway (that was back in my Toronto days-ok ok a month ago!), and that may grab my attention. I don't trust one more than the other, and I rarely buy books these days-I've been getting most of them from the library!

  1. I'm around the same place you are. I tend to look for books through exposure in reviews but the overall opinion, good or bad, isn't the thing that sways me.

  3. I have certain reviewers that I trust their recommendations more than others. For example, Stephen King in his EW column....if he says there's something out there worth trying, I'll try it. But I try to avoid too many reviews until after I've read the book and made up my own mind. Part of that is because people's definition of what is and is not a SPOILER can differ.

  5. I've found that since I have started blogging I read more reviews than I used to. They can be quite helpful.

  6. I'm the same as far as buying, I get most of mine from the library so it doesn't matter if it's good or not!

  7. I'm with you on buying books! The recent books I've actually bought have been because I was traveling and didn't want to somehow lose a library book.

Also, if I really love a book I borrowed from the library, I may consider buying my own copy to add to my personal library.

Hope you'll check out my post and say hello!

  10. I am somewhat influenced by book reviews, but I have found out recently (Freedom) that I can't trust all opinions. I do see whats on the top ten list, but then I am swayed to seeing what you, Sara, read as well. I love going into book stores and just finding a cover that catches my eye and if it has a good write up on the cover I'll get it. I do try to find out if it is in the library first, but there are certain books that I feel I Need it and so it comes home with me from the Book Store!
