Booking Through Thursday: Influenced

Question May 13, 2010: Are your book choices influenced by friends and family? Do their recommendations carry weight for you? Or do you choose your books solely by what you want to read?

My response:
I pick books based on what I think would be interesting but my book choices are also definitely influenced by friends and family, in a number of ways actually. In honour of listophelia I shall answer this in list format:

1. If ANYBODY recommends a book I usually write it down and often read it.
2. If you buy me a book I will read it-my aunt has bought me books for Christmas or my
birthday since I was a kid and she always had great picks (thanks Nancy!)
3. If I'm at your house I will look at your library and ask what you have that's good
4. at Marcia's house I have a list of the books she owns that I want to borrow-every once in
a while she will bring me a few random books from said selection.
5. I have a Wish List on amazon.ca and love that it will make suggestions for books that I might
like based on what I've read or looked at. It also suggests book based on what other people
bought that also bought/looked at a certain book.
6. I still love you Oprah.

How about you? Are your book selections influenced by anyone?

  2. I have learnt to wander into bookstores, spend quiet time looking at books, fingering them, reading some passages and wondering what these books may truly mean to us. I sometimes choose books because they are non-fiction, because they have some medical interest or background, sometimes it's because of the cover picture, or the byline that draws me in. Sometimes I recognize the books from your lists and suggestions, or that have been recommended by family, friends, or co-workers. I have never really been dissapointed in a book since I believe that all books stir different emotions within us, re-evaluating events in our own lives, allowing us to dream, change, share and love. I thank Sara for encouraging me to return to my love of reading. You keep me on my toes, though I don't think I will ever be able to catch up and keep up to you. You do make it verrryyy interesting.

  3. I like to take my time in bookstores like Doris.
Sometimes it's the book covers that reel me in other times I look for something in a certain section like Spirituality or Murder Mysteries, as you can see I have an ecclectic taste in books. I also have always followed what Sara has been reading but I get my ideas from various sources. I always look at the Book Pullout Section in the Winnipeg Free Press on Saturdays and also from the Globe and Mail. I have also picked up some Oprah suggestions. I do,however have an obssesion with house and garden magazines. I Love Them!
